Rise in Digital Device Usage Among Toddlers in Germany

A significant shift has been observed in Germany regarding the prevalence of toddlers accessing smart devices, as highlighted in the latest miniKIM study on media interactions of two to five-year-olds. The research indicates that as of 2023, one in every five toddlers had access to a tablet, showcasing a 50% increase from data collected in 2020.

Moreover, statistics from parental reports reveal that one in every ten toddlers aged two to five already owns a personal mobile phone or smartphone. Surprisingly, 42% of parents mentioned that their toddlers do not possess any digital devices of their own.

The miniKIM study is conducted by the Medienpädagogischen Forschungsverbund Südwest (mpfs), a collaboration between the Landesanstalt für Kommunikation Baden-Württemberg (LFK) and the Medienanstalt Rheinland-Pfalz in conjunction with the Südwestrundfunk (SWR). In September last year, 600 parents were surveyed online regarding the media usage habits of their two to five-year-old children.

Claiming to be representative of German-speaking online households, the study encompasses various aspects including the daily screen time, media preferences, and everyday activities of the young children.

This article will provide updates as new data becomes available.
