Revolutionizing Digital Identity Verification

In the near future, proving your identity digitally at checkpoints will become the new norm. The Minister of the Interior, Karner, has unveiled significant enhancements to the electronic ID card application. For holders of an Austrian ID, it is now possible to store their driver’s license, registration certificate, and age proof on their mobile phones. The digital identity card is now seamlessly integrated into the eID card application, set to function as a virtual identity card across Europe starting in 2026. This was announced on Tuesday by Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner and Digitalization State Secretary Claudia Plakolm (both ÖVP), as reported by heute.at.

“Digital proof of identity is essentially a fourth form of ID on your mobile phone,” stated Minister of the Interior Karner. “Police officers can use an app to verify it, streamlining vehicle checks, making our police force modern, efficient, and ready for the times.”

To configure your virtual identity card, you’ll need to download an updated version of the eID card app. From there, select the new “Proof of Identity” option under the “Identity Cards” menu. Simply follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.

A QR code valid for a brief period is generated within the “eID card” app, serving as proof of identity during checks. Another individual, such as a police officer, can scan this QR code with their app to verify the data. If the checking party uses the “eAusweise” or “eAusweis Check” app, data can be transferred between devices via Bluetooth, without requiring an internet connection.

The “eAusweise” app has already been downloaded 1.5 million times since its launch in October 2022, according to the Ministry of the Interior. 600,000 citizens have activated their digital driver’s license, and over 400,000 have virtual registration certificates in use. The digital age proof has been activated 250,000 times.

Introducing the new feature, “My ID Austria data,” which provides users with a citizen account offering greater transparency and clarity within the data landscape. This feature enables individuals to review the data stored in their Austrian ID. “I can now see what information the state holds about me and ensure its accuracy,” expressed Digitalization State Secretary Plakolm.
