Europe is planning to challenge the dominance of the American Starlink program by launching its own satellite network called Iris2. This will enable global internet access and enhance the security of government communications and public services. The Iris2 project aims to create a constellation of over 200 satellites in low Earth, medium Earth, and geostationary orbits. It is worth noting that the Starlink network currently operates only in low Earth orbits.
The main goals of the Iris2 project are to ensure Europe’s sovereignty in the field of communications, especially in areas crucial to the continent such as Africa and the Arctic. It also aims to provide critical services in natural disasters and conflicts. Unlike the Starlink service, which is subject to the decisions of a single individual (Elon Musk), Iris2 will be used according to the agreements made by Brussels.
The Iris2 space constellation will also have the capability to serve military forces. Commissioner Thierry Breton emphasized the need for a constellation with dedicated military characteristics, as evidenced by the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The Iris2 project will also be accompanied by the development of the European heavy-lift launch vehicle Ariane 6, which is essential for deploying satellites into the appropriate orbits. However, European authorities also plan to utilize the services of other smaller mini-rocket operators. Currently, the only European operator is the Spanish company PLD Space.
The Iris2 project is a key step for Europe in the space race, ensuring sovereignty and independence in satellite communications. Previous European programs such as Galileo and Copernicus have been crucial in terms of geographic positioning and Earth observation.
