Accelera, Daimler Truck and PACCAR Choose Mississippi for Advanced Battery Cell Manufacturing

Accelera, Daimler Truck, and PACCAR have announced their selection of Marshall County, Mississippi, as the future site for advanced battery cell manufacturing for their joint venture. This collaboration aims to localize battery cell production for commercial electric vehicles and is expected to create over 2,000 manufacturing jobs in the United States. The companies plan to start producing battery cells at the 21-gigawatt hour (GWh) factory by 2027.

The joint venture, which was unveiled in September, aims to establish a scalable operation that can provide cost-effective and innovative battery cell technology, supporting the adoption of electric vehicles in medium- and heavy-duty commercial transportation. Accelera, Daimler Truck, and PACCAR will jointly own 30% of the business and have equal control over its operations. The primary focus will be on lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery technology for commercial battery-electric trucks. EVE Energy, a manufacturer of LFP battery cells, will play a crucial role in the joint venture as a technology partner, owning 10% of the business and contributing its expertise in battery cell design and manufacturing.

The selection of Marshall County as the manufacturing site is not only significant for the involved companies but also represents an important step towards achieving their shared vision of a decarbonized future. Jennifer Rumsey, Chair and CEO of Cummins, expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to drive economic growth and job creation in Mississippi while strengthening partnerships and meeting customer needs.

The decision to establish localized battery cell production is seen as a critical aspect of delivering cost-effective solutions to customers in their efforts to decarbonize their operations. John O’Leary, President and CEO of Daimler Truck North America, expressed gratitude to the state of Mississippi and the Marshall County community for their support in realizing their shared climate goals.

Preston Feight, CEO of PACCAR, also emphasized the partnership with the state, communities, and people of Mississippi, stating that the new battery cell factory would provide industry-leading zero-emission solutions at an affordable cost for their customers in the region.
