Wieloletnia kariera Noela McGratha

Noel McGrath, the legendary Tipperary hurling player, has had a successful career spanning fifteen years. Although physically he hasn’t changed much since his debut in 2009, weighing 81 kg then and now around 88 kg, he remains as competitive as ever. With his consistently strong performance and small hands, he maintains high skill levels in the game.

Noel will not be participating in the upcoming match against Dublin, and he will likely not be ready for the next game against Galway at Semple. However, he will soon return to the field to address what is seen as weaknesses in the team.

His first league match in 2009 against Cormsmith resulted in a Tipperary victory. Noel came on as a substitute for James Woodlock twelve minutes before the end of the match. It was also a historic day as it marked the first ever intercounty match played under artificial lights in the newly designed Semple Stadium.

Throughout his career, McGrath has been nominated multiple times for the All Star award and even won it in 2009 and 2023, earning him the title of Young Player of the Year. Only Tony Kelly from Clare has scored more points than him in the championships. Last year, after Gearóid O’Connor’s injury, Noel stepped in as the team’s free taker.

Despite changes in the hurling game since McGrath’s debut, with increased points scored and possession statistics, there is still a place for a player like Noel who can see the unique space and make impactful plays.

McGrath admires the younger players who enter the senior scene already physically fit and trained – he first encountered them as a rookie in Tipperary in 2008. However, he has managed to survive through accumulated experience playing for the Loughmore-Castleiney club. At just 16 years old, he won the Tipperary championship in 2007 with them, followed by the Munster championship.

McGrath takes pride in his career and maintains a high level of skill because he believes that regardless of physical conditions, fundamental skills are the most important in this game.
