That’s why Iberdrola has decided to install six new energy storage systems with a total capacity of 150 MW. This innovative solution will allow for the effective integration of renewable sources into the energy system.

Each project will generate over 100 jobs, both during construction and operation. This is another positive outcome of introducing new energy storage technologies – job creation in the sustainable energy sector.

The batteries will utilize lithium-ion technology, which is currently the most widespread due to its efficiency, technological maturity, and favorable cost ratios. The new systems will operate in hybrid technology, working in collaboration with renewable energy sources – in this case, a photovoltaic power plant. This will enable the use of solar energy for charging and powering the batteries.

Iberdrola recognizes the importance of energy storage technology for optimizing the use of clean energy, regulating grid frequency with millisecond accuracy, and providing backup power during periods of high demand. Therefore, the projects for installing new batteries have been deemed strategic under the Economic Recovery and Transformation Program (PERTE) in the field of renewable energy sources, green hydrogen, and storage (ERHA). The total construction cost of the systems will be €37.5 million.
