Free Computer Course Offers Chromebook and a Year of Free Internet Access

2024-01-27

Nevins Library is offering a computer course that introduces the fundamentals of digital literacy, and anyone who completes the full 15-hour program will receive a modern Chromebook and a year of free internet access.

Krista McLeod, the library director, initially had reservations about this offer, but the non-profit organization Tech Goes Home, which designed the course, has a good track record of collaborating with libraries, schools, and housing authorities since 2000, so she decided to give it a try. McLeod was surprised by the financial support the organization receives from foundations.

Tech Goes Home will allocate funds for training library staff to lead three different courses: one for adults and seniors, one for small businesses, and one for parents and young children. One of the goals is for parents to be able to use technology alongside their children, know what their kids are doing on the computer, and help them with their homework. Introducing parents to the digital world is crucial for the library, so that they don’t fall behind their children.

There is a high level of interest in the course, as 39 people have already registered for the first session, and if necessary, the library will create a waiting list. The library has hired four teachers and will train them to become Tech Goes Home instructors who will conduct classes at various times.

Tech Goes Home also has a unique approach to designing courses that cater to all age groups and people from different backgrounds. The courses are culturally tailored, and instructors will learn how to conduct classes in the language of the participants.

Tech Goes Home receives funding from cities, states, corporations, and philanthropic institutions. Currently, the organization is seeking access to federal support.

According to Kristi McLeod, digital literature is now incredibly significant in our culture, and the lack of basic computer knowledge causes many people to fall behind. The aim of the course is to provide access to devices, high-speed internet, and basic computer skills.
