Tribeca Films: Empowering Independent Filmmakers in a Digital Era

Tribeca Enterprises and Giant Pictures have launched Tribeca Films, a distribution brand aimed at supporting high-quality independent films from the festival circuit. The company focuses on transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) and free ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) subscriptions, while also providing distribution opportunities through Giant Pictures’ streaming infrastructure and the Tribeca channel.

Tribeca Films will debut with six new titles, to be announced this spring season, ahead of the 2024 Tribeca festival in June, and plans to acquire 25 films annually from major festivals such as Sundance, Berlin, SXSW, Cannes, Toronto, and Tribeca.

“Tribecca Festival has always championed independent films and for over two decades has supported new directors, giving them a global platform to showcase their projects. As the film industry evolves, we recognize the need for better support for independent creators in today’s crowded streaming and distribution market,” said Tribeca co-founder and CEO Jane Rosenthal. “Too many new voices are not reaching audiences. Tribeca Films will promote these films and give them a life beyond the festivals.”

Nick Savva, CEO of Giant Pictures, stated that “it’s increasingly difficult to secure deals for specialty films in today’s landscape, so it’s a perfect time for Tribeca to return to distribution in the United States.”

“I’m excited to bring Tribeca’s impressive lineup of festival films to leading streaming platforms,” including The Roku Channel, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube Movies & TV, Kanopy, Tubi, Pluto TV, VIZIO WatchFree+, Sling TV, Peacock, Vudu, XUMO, and others.

The Tribeca Films label is an evolution of previous distribution initiatives for Tribeca, which will acquire fully completed feature-length narrative, documentary, and animated projects, and provide marketing support on Tribeca’s media platforms. Giant Pictures will be responsible for negotiating licensing agreements, utilizing creative materials, technical operations, and royalty settlements.

All films submitted for consideration by the brand must have digital rights available to the U.S. audience.

Tribeca Enterprises, owned by Lupa Systems’ James Murdoch, is the owner and operator of the Tribeca Festival, Tribeca Studios, and production company m ss ng p eces.

Giant Pictures is a digital distributor that owns and operates the unique theatrical brand Drafthouse Films. It is also a distribution and technology partner of the Tribeca Festival.
