WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging apps, is set to shake up the world of file sharing with a new feature in development. Similar to Apple’s AirDrop, this feature will allow users to share files with nearby devices.

To activate the file sharing request, users will need to shake their devices, and both parties must be in close proximity. When the recipient opens WhatsApp and shakes their device, they will be able to see and accept the share request. Although the exact range required for this feature is unknown, Apple’s AirDrop has a range of approximately 30 feet.
Security is a top priority for WhatsApp, and this new file sharing feature will be no exception. Files shared through this feature, which will primarily consist of photos and videos, will be end-to-end encrypted to ensure privacy. Furthermore, when sharing files with contacts that are not on their list, users’ phone numbers will remain private.
The extent to which this new feature will differ from AirDrop remains to be seen. Currently, WhatsApp allows users to send up to 100 photos at once over regular messaging.
