WhatsApp Developing New Feature to Shake Up File Sharing

WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging apps, is set to shake up the world of file sharing with a new feature in development. Similar to Apple’s AirDrop, this feature will allow users to share files with nearby devices.

While an official release date has not been announced, details about how the feature will work have emerged. To activate the file sharing request, users will need to shake their devices, and both parties must be in close proximity. When the recipient opens WhatsApp and shakes their device, they will be able to see and accept the share request. Although the exact range required for this feature is unknown, Apple’s AirDrop has a range of approximately 30 feet.

Security is a top priority for WhatsApp, and this new file sharing feature will be no exception. Files shared through this feature, which will primarily consist of photos and videos, will be end-to-end encrypted to ensure privacy. Furthermore, when sharing files with contacts that are not on their list, users’ phone numbers will remain private.

The extent to which this new feature will differ from AirDrop remains to be seen. Currently, WhatsApp allows users to send up to 100 photos at once over regular messaging. Whether files shared through this new feature will automatically download to users’ camera rolls or use Bluetooth alone is still unclear.

The goal of WhatsApp with this feature is to provide users with a more convenient way to share files with their friends and family. It is yet to be determined if it will truly compete with AirDrop and become the preferred method of file sharing across all devices. Nevertheless, it is an exciting development that is sure to have a significant impact in the world of messaging apps.
