Czy robimy wystarczająco dużo?

During the recent meeting of the Comeragh District Council held in Dungarvan on January 17th, Fine Gael councillor Liam Brazil posed the question of whether we are doing enough in terms of tackling littering.

Previously, a request had been made to the Council regarding the installation of CCTV cameras to combat this issue, and Councillor Brazil asked the executive representatives for any updates, as he sees this as the only way forward for the Comeragh District.

Councillor Brazil also suggested that the Council could organize a day where the public can dispose of items for a small fee, aiming to “remove [the act of littering] from our villages, forests, and mountains.”

“Today, things like mattresses, refrigerators, and stoves are being dumped in the countryside, and that is no longer enough,” he added.

Following further discussions between the Council and Councillor Brazil, he proposed that individuals caught illegal dumping should be publicly named. He stated, “It is the only way to deter people from committing these terrible acts.”

“Shaming and raising awareness,” interjected Councillor Declan Clune.

In response to one of Councillor Brazil’s questions regarding littering, an executive representative mentioned that they will provide information about the number of fines imposed in the previous year.
According to the Department of the Environment, the CCTV cameras have not been installed yet, and the Council awaits approval of the operating procedures.

While the situation regarding the CCTV cameras seems to be progressing in a positive direction, despite not being installed yet, the Council encountered a setback in response to Councillor Brazil’s request for organizing “collection days” as a potential initiative conducted by the Council for the community.

Regarding one-off collections, Mrs. Wallace from the executive stated, “We do not have funding for it this year, so they will not be organized, but people can bring their items to the designated location by the Council.”
