Wprowadzenie paszportów na baterie dla samochodów elektrycznych w Unii Europejskiej

According to media reports, starting from 2027, all electric vehicles sold in the countries of the European Union (EU) will be required to have a “battery passport.” These battery passports for electric vehicles are expected to contain information about the supply chain, sources, and even the raw materials used in battery production. However, it should be noted that the EU regulations have not specified the exact information that must be included in the battery passports. Regulators have established the Battery Passport Consortium to further clarify the details.

Circulor, a manufacturer of battery passports, will serve as the technical leader, and the program is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action of Germany. The ministry has also partnered with several car manufacturers such as BMW and Audi, among others.

According to the current project, the passport will consist of 90 pieces of information divided into seven categories: General battery and manufacturer information, Compliance, Certification and Labels, Battery carbon footprint, Supply chain traceability, Battery materials and composition, Circular economy and Resource efficiency, and Performance and Durability.

Ellen Carey, Head of External Affairs at Circulor, stated that the passports aim to “create accountability for this supply chain – who touched what, when, and where.” She also added that each passport will cost between $7.60 and $13.90 per battery.

Carey further explained, “We take the information we have about that piece of nickel and we create a digital copy. Where was it mined? What was the geographic location? What was its weight? What was the processing time? All that information that we gather – at every step of the journey of that same piece of nickel – we can link to that VIN number or that QR code.”

According to reports, although manufacturers will have access to the full range of information contained in the battery passports, car owners will only be able to see simplified information and data.
