During the Developer Direct livestream on Xbox, MachineGames revealed the first details about their project related to Indiana Jones. The company confirmed the title of the game – Indiana Jones and the Great Circle – and announced that it will be released on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Xbox Cloud Gaming later this year. If you thought it was just another adventure action game where Indy tries to stop villains in pursuit of a mysterious power, you couldn’t be more right.
The game takes place in 1937, between the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. The mysterious power sought by evil people is linked to something called the Great Circle – a perfect circle around the globe that connects ancient man-made places of “great spiritual significance.”
In the first gameplay trailer, we can see Indiana Jones from a first-person perspective as he explores pyramids in Egypt, conquers snowy mountain peaks, sneaks through enemy fortresses, and tries to survive deadly threats. He also uses his bullwhip to trip an antagonist (accompanied by the characteristic Wilhelm scream), fights off Nazis, and jumps from one helicopter to another.
In some cutscene sequences and platform jumping moments, the camera zooms out, allowing us to get a better look at the legendary archaeologist. The game features the likeness of Harrison Ford, but the character is brought to life by the voice of Troy Baker, a well-known actor in the gaming industry.
It is still too early to make a definitive judgment, but MachineGames, with the support of Todd Howard from Bethesda as executive producer, seems to perfectly capture the look, atmosphere, and sound of an Indiana Jones adventure. We will find out how well they’ve succeeded when the game is released later this year. One thing is certain – Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has become one of the most anticipated games for me personally.
