Trends: Are they really worth it?

2024-01-18

Every year, new trends and revolutionary ideas emerge. Unfortunately, not all of them prove to be practical and quickly fade into oblivion. Sometimes trends change dramatically, while other times it turns out that we simply need something good enough, rather than the “newest” or “best”.

Are mobile phones really getting smaller?

Once upon a time, the main trend was to have the smallest mobile phone possible. For 20 years, phones became increasingly smaller, and size was considered the main advantage. However, with the popularity of watching movies on phones, the trend suddenly reversed, and now larger phones are considered better.

Social isolation and family planning

During lockdown, it was expected that there would be more pregnancies, as couples would have more time for each other. However, it turned out that people isolated themselves even more after the end of lockdowns, leading to decreased dating activity and delayed family planning due to the rising cost of living.

Has the technological revolution really happened?

We often hear promises of revolutions that are never fulfilled. One example of this is the lack of a modular phone revolution, which had a promising start in 2010. Similarly, the Tesla Cybertruck was announced years ago but is still not available to customers.

Do all trends make sense?

Among many novelties that have not proven practical, we can mention “fat-free” chips made with Olestra, which caused severe diarrhea, solar roads that can be driven on (which proved impractical), curved televisions, and unsuccessful projects like the Firephone or Kinect for Xbox 360, which quickly disappeared from the market.
