Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel Prepare to Transform the 5G Data Plan Landscape

Researchers predict that major telecom companies, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, are preparing to transform the 5G data plan landscape by discontinuing their unlimited 5G data offerings for premium customers. This strategic move aims to enhance revenue growth and capitalize on monetization opportunities.

Industry analysts anticipate a significant price increase of 5-10% for 5G services compared to their 4G counterparts, starting in the latter half of 2024. This adjustment is expected to result in a potential 20% rise in mobile tariffs in the September quarter of 2024. These changes demonstrate Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel’s deliberate efforts to improve the return on investment for their 5G infrastructure and customer acquisition costs.

It is worth noting that Vodafone-Idea and BSNL, two other prominent telecom players, have yet to introduce their own 5G services in the country. Consequently, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are poised to lead the way in shaping the 5G market.

In recent news, Bharti Airtel has partnered with Ericsson to successfully test Ericsson’s pre-commercial Reduced Capability (RedCap) software on the Airtel 5G network. This collaboration, conducted in conjunction with chip-maker Qualcomm, utilized the 5G RedCap test module and marks the first implementation and validation of RedCap in India.

Ericsson RedCap is an advanced radio access network (RAN) software solution that aims to enable innovative 5G use cases and facilitate a larger number of 5G connections across various devices, including smartwatches, wearables, industrial sensors, and AR/VR devices.

As the telecom industry undergoes unprecedented changes, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are adopting strategic measures that will revolutionize the 5G data plan landscape. By discontinuing unlimited 5G data plans for premium customers, these telecom giants are creating new opportunities for monetization and revenue growth.
