In a significant stage of 5G network development in Malaysia, Wholesale 5G operator Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) has achieved 5G coverage in over 80% of populated areas. This progress meets the final criteria for establishing a second operator in Malaysia.
According to the Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzila, as of December 31st, 5G coverage in Malaysia reached 80.2% in populated areas. With the goal of network coverage being met, the special 5G task force plans to convene to devise the final path for the establishment of a second 5G operator.
Fahmi emphasized that the government will promptly consider and announce the transition from a single 5G network model to a dual-network. Once the conditions agreed upon by the 5G task force are fulfilled, the implementation of dual 5G network coverage can proceed.
Additionally, the minister confirmed that the second 5G operator will be purely commercial and will not have government ownership. This move aligns with the government’s plans to promote competition and innovation in the 5G market.
Currently, the Ministry of Finance holds a 30% stake in DNB, while the remaining shares are divided among five operators in Malaysia. If the second 5G operator receives official approval, the Ministry of Finance will have the option to exit DNB. Furthermore, DNB stakeholders will have the opportunity to decide who will stay in DNB and who will transition to the second 5G operator, subject to the final decision of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
With the recent reforms being undertaken by the Malaysian government, DNB has been placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Digitalization. This decision reflects the government’s recognition of the importance of the digital sector and its commitment to prioritizing digital transformation.
