Google Maps Will Remove Car Mode – What Does It Mean for Drivers?

According to the 9to5Google website, Google is planning to remove the car mode feature in Google Maps. This decision comes as a surprise, as the car mode was introduced in 2022 as a replacement for the control panel that made using the phone while navigating easier.

Instead of the car mode, we now have to tap the microphone icon and give voice commands to the Google Assistant in order to make calls, send messages, or play media while navigating.

Previously, when using Google’s navigation, we could access a panel with key functions such as making calls or dictating messages. But Google decided to replace this solution with the car mode, which integrated the Phone, Messages, and music player apps into the bottom toolbar, directly below the map view.

Unfortunately, it is still unknown what we will get in exchange for the car mode. It is likely that Google wants us to mainly rely on the Assistant and give voice commands. People who prefer traditional app navigation will have to manually browse their phone screens and search for the necessary apps.

It’s a shame that the car mode will be removed, especially since Google introduced it relatively recently and it wasn’t available everywhere yet.

Will Google replace the car mode with a new solution? There is currently no answer to that, but we will keep track of the situation and provide updates on any changes in Google Maps.
