Google Introduces Replacement Parts for Pixel 8 and 8 Pro Smartphones

Google has recently introduced replacement parts for its latest flagship smartphones, the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, further expanding its commitment to user repairability. This move comes after the release of a diagnostic app and instructional guides earlier this month.

Users on iFixit now have access to a variety of replacement parts for the Pixel 8. Significant components include the screen, rear housing (available in all three colors), battery, wide-angle rear camera, ultrawide rear camera, and front camera. A comparison with last year’s model reveals interesting findings, with the original Pixel 8 parts priced $100 higher than its predecessor.

While some parts, such as the battery, remain unchanged and cost $42.99, the “Current” screen has seen a $20 increase due to improved features like a 120Hz refresh rate and enhanced brightness. Users can now purchase rear housings in three different colors: Hazel, Obsidian, and Rose. However, the ability to create a “FrankenPhone,” combining different colors and patterns, no longer exists.

The biggest price increase is observed for the wide-angle rear camera, which has jumped from $89.99 to $142.99. Additionally, the ultrawide rear camera is now $20 more expensive than its predecessor, offering improved photography capabilities.

Moving on to the Pixel 8 Pro model, users will notice a $47 price increase for the triple-camera system, which is sold as a bundle. However, the price change for the screen is relatively small.

Google’s decision to provide replacement parts on iFixit not only gives users greater control over their devices but also promotes sustainability by encouraging repair instead of replacement. Thanks to these replacement parts, users now have the ability to fix their devices with ease.
