Constantly Growing Problem of Unused Applications on Smartphones

According to a recently conducted study, as many as 58 percent of iPhone and Android users have numerous applications on their devices that they never use. Out of the 2,000 adults surveyed, only 42 percent of smartphone owners reported regularly using applications, leaving a significant number of unused apps on their screens.

Food ordering apps were found to be the most frequently ignored, with 15 percent of respondents admitting to neglecting them. Loyalty card-related apps were also classified under this category, with 11 percent of participants ignoring them. Additionally, mobile applications for photo editing, dating, and social media were also frequently overlooked, each receiving a rating of 14 percent in the study.

While only one in ten adult respondents claimed to use all the applications on their phone, the average smartphone user estimates storing up to 39 apps on their device. This suggests that many users download apps out of curiosity or convenience but do not actively use them on a daily basis.

This trend has prompted the technological company Revolut to introduce Revolut 10, a new service aimed at helping customers organize their finances and provide a clear view of their money. A Revolut spokesperson explained the need for “digital decluttering,” advising users to keep only the apps that are truly necessary for their daily lives.

The study also revealed that smartphone users often accumulate a large number of unused photos on their devices, with an average storage of 1,592 photos. Additionally, over 10 percent of participants reported receiving regular notifications about their devices being full.

Furthermore, the study found that a significant number of users feel overwhelmed by the multitude of application notifications they receive, leading them to mute some of them. This demonstrates a desire to improve control over the digital clutter that smartphones often generate.

In an era where online security poses an increasing threat, the study indicated that only 23 percent of respondents consider themselves very well-informed about protecting themselves from online scams. Revolut emphasized the importance of staying vigilant against fraud and offers its customers fraud detection services to warn users about malicious activities.

With the growing number of available applications, smartphone users are encouraged to regularly assess their usefulness to maintain a transparent digital experience.
