The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has recognized the issues with the Fix My Street app, which is primarily used for reporting road pothole problems. To address these technical issues and improve the process of assigning repair works, the organization has proposed hiring engineer-advisors to assist the contractors.
Launched in 2017 to tackle the persistent issue of potholes in Bengaluru streets, the app was initially only available to BBMP employees and traffic police. However, in 2023, it was made available to the public, allowing residents to report road potholes and repair-related issues.
The decision to hire engineer-advisors stems from the fact that a significant portion of the completed works are not being transmitted due to app problems, especially with photo uploads. Contractors face difficulties in using the app, resulting in delays in updating the status of completed works.
To expedite the transmission process and ensure that assignments are completed and updated in a timely manner, BBMP plans to employ a team of engineer-advisors. The estimated cost of hiring is 41 lakh rupees for 11 months. Under the agreement, ten engineers will be employed, serving as junior engineers and second-degree assistants.
While this move aims to address the ongoing issues with the Fix My Street app, some critics believe it is an inappropriate use of taxpayers’ money. They highlight the existence of other apps, such as Sahaaya, that offer more comprehensive features for reporting various issues. These critics argue that BBMP should consider upgrading existing apps instead of investing in separate solutions.
