Another Step Forward for Linux Fedora on Apple Silicon Computers

Linux Fedora has reached an important milestone, becoming the first full distribution for Apple Silicon Macs with the M1/M2 chip series. The project, developed in collaboration between Asahi Linux and the Fedora Project, has been in the works since 2021. According to ZDNet, Fedora Asahi Remix 39 is now available, giving users the ability to run Fedora Linux on MacBook, Mac Mini, Mac Studio, and iMac devices with Apple M1 and M2 processors.

While this new Linux distribution encompasses a wide range of Apple Silicon computers, the current Mac Pro model is not yet supported. However, Fedora Linux 40 is expected to introduce full graphical support for Apple M1/M2, finally allowing Linux to run on Mac Pro.

In an earlier announcement on their blog this year, the Asahi Linux team expressed their goal of creating a polished and intuitive Linux environment that could serve as a model for other distributions. They aim to integrate their work with other distributions, ensuring compatibility and ease of use across different platforms. To achieve this, the team created their own distribution – Asahi Linux Arch Linux ARM remix. It includes integration scripts, bootloader components, user-space support packages, as well as customized kernel and Mesa packages.

Fedora Asahi Remix offers users a choice between two desktop environments: KDE Plasma 5.27 Long Term Support (LTS) and GNOME 45. Both options default to using the Wayland window system and enable XWayland for compatibility with X11 applications. Additionally, this distribution provides support for OpenGL 3.3, including GPU-accelerated geometry shaders and transform feedback, making it the first certified OpenGL ES 3.1 implementation for Apple Silicon.

To install Fedora Asahi Remix, users can simply run a command in the terminal for the latest version or a nightly build. The installation process is straightforward and shouldn’t take much time.

With the availability of Fedora Linux on Macs with Apple Silicon processors, users now have greater flexibility and choice in terms of operating systems. This marks an important step forward in the development of diverse Linux distributions compatible with Apple computers on ARM architecture.
