iOS 18 Update for iPhone 16 in the Works

According to sources, Apple is currently working on a major software update for iPhone, iOS 18, with the codename “Crystal.” While iOS 17 was released just a few months ago, Apple’s tradition of annual updates suggests that we can expect the first iOS 18 beta in June, after WWDC 2024.

The most important aspect of this early announcement of iOS 18 is that it provides insights into upcoming iPhone models. The code refers to four unreleased iPhone models, likely belonging to the iPhone 16 series. These models are D47 and D48 (iPhone 16 and 16 Plus), and D93 and D94 (iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max).

One notable observation from the code is the absence of any mention of the rumored iPhone 16 Ultra. Speculations about whether the iPhone 16 Ultra will be a separate device or just a renaming of the iPhone 16 Pro Max have not been confirmed. The lack of any reference to the iPhone 16 Ultra in the code suggests that this model may not be released in 2024, although a name change is still possible.

An interesting discovery in the code is that all four iPhone models will use the same chip, known as the t8140 or A18 chip. This would signify a departure from Apple’s previous strategy of using different chips in different iPhone models. Whether there will be different variants of the A18 chip with varying power levels for individual models remains to be seen.

At this stage, more cannot be deciphered from the iOS 18 code, but it indicates that the iPhone 16 will be equipped with Broadcom’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules. As the work is still in its early stages, other significant changes have not yet been implemented.
