Kenya Records Significant Growth in 5G Users

According to the Kenyan Communication Authority (CA), Kenya has witnessed a significant increase in the number of fifth-generation (5G) network users, reaching a total of 509,737 in the three months ending in September. This represents a 13.3% growth compared to the reported 449,794 users in June. The introduction of 5G in Kenya was a significant milestone for the country, making it one of the first African nations to adopt this advanced technology.

Leading telecommunications provider, Safaricom, launched its commercial 5G network in October last year after an extensive testing period. Following Safaricom’s initiative, Airtel also introduced its 5G network in July this year, enabling a larger number of Kenyans to access high-speed internet services.

The increasing number of 5G users in Kenya demonstrates the growing demand for faster internet speeds. Safaricom’s CEO, Peter Ndegwa, emphasized that the implementation of 5G was a crucial step in enabling retail and corporate customers to explore new possibilities. In response to this demand, Safaricom has expanded the coverage of its 5G network to selected communities in 35 counties since November this year.

The expansion of 5G coverage has benefited new counties, including Bomet, Busia, Isiolo, Kitui, Mandera, Migori, Tharaka-Nithi, Trans Nzoia, Homa Bay, West Pokot, Embu, Kirinyaga, Muranga, and Turkana. These counties now join the existing locations where Safaricom’s 5G network is available, such as Nairobi, Kiambu, Mombasa, Kisumu, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Garissa, Kajiado, Kisii, Machakos, Kakamega, Kilifi, Siaya, Kericho, Kwale, Laikipia, Marsabit, Meru, Narok, Nyeri, and Vihiga.

Airtel is also striving to expand its 5G network presence in Kenya. The company has committed to building an additional 100 5G stations across the country by the end of the year. This expansion will increase the number of covered sub-counties from 180 to 221 and the number of counties from 15 to 32. Airtel aims to provide a greater number of Kenyans, households, and businesses with access to the limitless possibilities offered by 5G technology.

Ashish Malhotra, the Managing Director of Airtel Kenya, emphasized that 5G is not just about faster internet but also connects people, businesses, and communities in extraordinary ways. Airtel is dedicated to innovation and connectivity, contributing to the realization of a new era of opportunities for Kenya.
