Building Space Colonies – A New Solution to Earth’s Overpopulation?

According to Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, building gigantic space colonies could be a solution to the rapidly growing human population on Earth. In an interview with podcaster Lex Fridman, Bezos dismissed the idea of colonizing other planets, stating that constructing space colonies is the only way to accommodate the immense population growth.

Bezos suggests that these colonies could potentially house even a trillion people. “I would love to see a trillion humans living in the solar system, which has the resources to sustain such a gigantic civilization,” he says. He also added that if people resided in O’Neill space colonies, they could visit Earth for vacations.

The vision of space colonies is based on the concept introduced by science fiction writer Gerard K. O’Neill. Space stations, created as rotating cylindrical structures, would provide an artificial environment resembling Earth. According to Bezos, these colonies could accommodate a population 125 times larger than the current population of our planet.

Although Bezos is aware that he won’t live long enough to witness the construction and habitation of these colonies, he believes that it is a direction worth pursuing. Building space colonies could be the future for humanity, especially in light of Earth’s growing overpopulation and depletion of its resources.
