The state has launched new programs that allow residents to access digital versions of these essential documents on their smartphones.
Governor Jim Justice, alongside State Senate President Craig Blair and Division of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Everett Frazier, announced the introduction of digital motor vehicle registrations and mobile IDs during a press conference. West Virginians who choose to renew their vehicle registrations online now have the option to receive a secure, digital registration card directly stored in their smartphone wallet.
This digital registration option offers immediate access to vehicle information, eliminating the need to search through physical documents. Residents can conveniently request and download their digital registrations through the DMV website or self-service kiosks. This initiative supports the state’s commitment to modernization and aims to provide greater convenience to West Virginia motorists.
Additionally, the DMV is developing a mobile ID program that is expected to launch in the early spring. While these digital solutions are not meant to replace physical licenses and registrations, they offer an added level of convenience for residents. The mobile ID will allow for easy and secure identification at participating businesses and government agencies. However, it is advised that residents keep their physical licenses and registrations when traveling out of state, as some jurisdictions may not recognize the digital versions.
West Virginia now joins a group of 13 states that already offer mobile IDs. Furthermore, four states, as confirmed by Apple, allow residents to add their IDs to their Apple Wallet. State Senate President Craig Blair has been a strong advocate for digital initiatives that enhance convenience for West Virginia motorists and reduce waiting times at DMV offices. Last year, the legislature passed a bill introducing the Digital Title and Registration System, which expedites the issuance of vehicle titles and benefits businesses with vehicle fleets.

Plans are underway to expand digital options further, including the potential for license plate renewal through smartphones and dedicated applications.
