Palworld osiąga rekordową popularność, ale czy zasługuje na nią?

Palworld, a survival game that combines various concepts, continues to gain popularity. In the last 24 hours, it reached a peak number of concurrent players, reaching 1,864,421, which is the second highest record in Steam’s history. Palworld surpassed Counter-Strike 2, and the only game that achieved higher results is PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, also known as Plunkbat or PUBG.

It seems almost impossible for Palworld to surpass the player count of PUBG, which reached 3.2 million. However, just four days after its release, Palworld has already sold six million copies, indicating that anything is possible.

Katharine, who had the opportunity to test Palworld, expressed her disappointment. She believes that the game is full of cynicism, devoid of joy, and possibly a bit cruel. The game’s creators combined creature design from Pokémon with survival and crafting systems from Ark: Survival Evolved.

Meanwhile, Edwin consulted a lawyer regarding the similarity of the creature design in Palworld to Pokémon and possible copyright infringement. The general belief is that the design has been modified enough to avoid any potential limitations. However, the situation may be different when it comes to modifications that add Pokémon to Palworld.

It is not surprising to me that Palworld is popular among players but not highly rated by critics. In the case of games, there is often a difference between the consensus of critics and commercial success. Just like the movie “Fast X,” which earns hundreds of millions of dollars, it does not mean that director Louis Leterrier or actor Jason Momoa will be awarded an Oscar or praised by New Yorker critics.

Even if Palworld were to turn out to be a “trash” game – I haven’t had the opportunity to test it myself, so I don’t have an opinion on that – there are certainly reasons to rejoice in its success. Firstly, it seems to be a continuation of what the creators achieved with the game Overdungeon, which I personally like. Secondly, Palworld’s success proves that a game capable of achieving such high popularity can come out of nowhere. I wonder how many players will still be engaged with Palworld in a few months.
