Iveco Group Selects BASF for Battery Recycling Partnership

Iveco Group has announced BASF as its first partner for battery recycling for its electric vehicles. The decision to collaborate with BASF on EV battery recycling is part of Iveco Group’s circular economy strategy, which is based on the 4R framework – Repair, Remanufacture, Reuse, and Recycle. The aim of the strategy is to increase the lifespan of batteries while reducing their overall environmental impact.

Iveco Group will also ensure compliance with the Extended Producer Responsibility policy, which requires manufacturers to take responsibility for the entire life cycle of the products they bring to the market.

“Lifecycle thinking is one of our strategic priorities related to sustainable development,” commented Angela Qu, Supply Chain Managing Director at Iveco Group. “BASF shares this approach with us, and their extensive collection network and battery recycling capabilities in Europe will help us close the loop from used batteries to new ones. By working together, we will enable a circular economy and reduce our carbon footprint, which is fully aligned with the Group’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.”

The Agreement between Iveco and BASF
BASF, which has opened Europe’s first joint production and recycling center for battery materials in Schwarzheide, Germany, will organize and manage the entire process of recycling lithium-ion batteries used in Iveco Group’s electric vans, buses, and trucks. The agreement includes collection, packaging, transportation, and recycling of batteries in various European countries.

After the material is collected, BASF will process the batteries into a black mass, from which critical raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel can be recovered and used in the production of new batteries. BASF will, therefore, base the total value of the battery recycling chain in Europe on delivering low-carbon emission recycled metals to the battery industry.

“Our partnership with Iveco Group is our first agreement regarding the recycling of batteries from electric vans, buses, and trucks, and an important step in our battery recycling business to expand into the commercial vehicle sector,” said Dr. Daniel Schönfelder, President of the Catalysts Division at BASF, responsible for battery materials and battery recycling business. “This will allow us to further strengthen our European collection network and make further progress in this growing market. With our recycling solutions, we want to support the European market in closing the loop and meeting the ambitious requirements of EU battery recycling regulations.”
