Success of 2023 for the Fighting Games Industry: Mortal Kombat 1 and Street Fighter 6 Lead

The year 2023 turned out to be significant for the fighting game community, with the introduction of two new flagship titles and continued support for many other games.

According to the latest data presented by Circana/the NPD Group, December 2023 and the entire year were fruitful for two games – Mortal Kombat 1 and Street Fighter 6, which surpassed stiff competition.

By the end of the year, Mortal Kombat 1 held the 8th spot in the sales rankings in the United States, earning a substantial amount of money.

Interestingly, Mortal Kombat ranked among the top eleven games with the highest number of monthly users on PlayStation 5, although it dropped a few positions compared to November. However, it did not appear on the list of most played games on Xbox or the Steam platform.

Street Fighter 6 was not present on the monthly games list, which is not surprising considering that it last appeared in August. However, it was much more frequently included in the yearly rankings.

Looking at the entire past year, Mortal Kombat 1 ended it in 8th place, surpassing games such as Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, EA Sports FC 24, Starfield, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Meanwhile, Street Fighter 6 ranked behind Final Fantasy 16 and Dead Island 2.

In terms of platforms, Mortal Kombat 1 claimed the 7th position in the sales rankings on PlayStation throughout the year, while Street Fighter 6 landed in 15th place.

It is also worth noting that Mortal Kombat 1 was the 8th best-selling game on Xbox, while Street Fighter 6 did not make the list. It also did not appear on the sales charts for the Nintendo platform.

However, there is one game that has resonated with owners of the Switch console – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Despite falling off the main NPD ranking last year, it continues to thrive in the market.

It is important to remember that these data pertain only to the United States. Capcom recently announced that Street Fighter 6 exceeded 3 million copies sold, just like Mortal Kombat 1. Both games seem to enjoy great success, but will this trend continue in 2024? Well, only time will tell, and the future holds more exciting titles such as Tekken 8.
