AMD Ryzen Outperforms Intel Meteor Lake in AI Tests

AMD Ryzen has surpassed the latest generation of Intel Meteor Lake mobile processors in artificial intelligence (AI) tests. Recent tests have shown that the AMD Ryzen 7840U with AI acceleration achieves better results than Intel Meteor Lake processors in some realistic tasks.

To assess the performance of Meteor Lake, we tested the Intel OpenVINO plugins for Audacity and GIMP, which are open-source software for sound and image editing. Additionally, we included two laptops with 13th generation Intel processors to compare them with Meteor Lake. We conducted tests on systems with Meteor Lake processors in CPU-only, NPU, and GPU modes.

The results showed that AMD Ryzen processors were faster in performing certain tasks compared to Meteor Lake. Specifically, in the case of image generation in GIMP using the OpenVINO Stable Diffusion plugin, the Acer Swift Go 14 and Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5i laptops equipped with Meteor Lake processors achieved the highest performance. However, the speed was optimized using GPU and NPU settings.

It is worth noting that the OpenVINO plugins have been specially optimized for Intel processors and GPUs. Although they can work on any x86 hardware, they were designed to provide higher performance on Intel processors. In the case of AMD processors, GPUs were unable to efficiently perform AI-related tasks due to a lack of compatibility with OpenVINO.

While Intel has certain advantages, such as the NPU recognition in Meteor Lake or the OpenVINO plugins, AMD Ryzen processors still surpass Meteor Lake in two out of the four tests. This less satisfactory performance indicates that Intel needs to focus on improving its AI capabilities.

In conclusion, although Intel Meteor Lake processors have introduced some innovations in the field of offline AI task handling, our tests have shown that AMD Ryzen processors are a better choice for certain realistic AI tasks. Intel needs to focus on enhancing its AI capabilities to match or exceed the competition in the PC AI market.
