Artificial Intelligence Used in the Creation of Foamstars Game by Square Enix

2024-01-17

Square Enix, a popular Japanese game producer, has decided to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) in the development of their latest title, the third-person shooter game Foamstars. Although the AI contribution is minimal, at around 0.01%, it still raises some controversies.

In an interview with VGC, the game’s producer, Kosuke Okatani, revealed that Foamstars will feature graphics generated by the popular tool Midjourney. However, Okatani emphasized that the majority of the game’s elements were created by humans. Artificial intelligence only played a small role in the production process.

Square Enix explained that they conducted experiments with Midjourney using simple prompts that were transformed into abstract images. The results were positively evaluated and utilized as album covers within the game. All other graphics and elements were created by the team of programmers and designers.

The involvement of artificial intelligence in the game development process often sparks controversy. Some argue that it poses a threat to the work of artists. Similar situations have occurred in other productions, such as System Shock Remake, which also utilized Midjourney.

Foamstars is a third-person shooter set to be released on February 6th for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The game will include three multiplayer modes, as well as single-player or cooperative missions. Foamstars will also be available as part of the PS Plus offering from March onwards.

Will the use of artificial intelligence in the production of Foamstars result in a similar reaction as other games? Only time will tell.
