According to the latest report from the International Data Corporation (IDC), Apple has emerged as the leader in global smartphone sales, surpassing the previous leader, Samsung. The American giant accounted for 20.1 percent of the market share, while Samsung achieved 19.4 percent. Chinese brands Xiaomi, OPPO, and Transsion secured the second, third, and fourth places in the rankings. Collectively, other manufacturers sold 31% of the devices.
Smartphone sales in 2023 were slightly lower than in previous years, experiencing a decline of over 3 percent. The pandemic and the need to cut expenses resulted in consumers upgrading their phones less frequently, leading to a decreased demand for new models. Nevertheless, experts predict growth in the smartphone market in 2024.
An interesting fact is that Apple, among the top three manufacturers, was the only one to increase its sales compared to the previous year, reaching over 234 million units. This is partially attributed to the company’s trade-in program for old models and its offering of interest-free installment plans for premium devices.
Meanwhile, Samsung has reported an expected decline in profits, primarily due to reduced demand for consumer electronics and the competition from cheaper Android models, such as those offered by Transsion and Xiaomi.
