Sony Decides Against Creating a Response to Microsoft’s FPS Boost

Sony has decided against introducing a response to Microsoft’s FPS Boost feature. However, Digital Foundry has decided to utilize an unofficial modification of Sony’s console to test how the technology can improve the performance of PlayStation 4 games on the PlayStation 5.

In collaboration with the modification creator, Digital Foundry tested several older PlayStation 4 titles on the PlayStation 5 in order to “unlock performance.” The tests confirm that the Japanese corporation can provide even better experiences with older games.

Sony and third-party publishers have not taken much action to unlock performance in many games from the previous generation. However, in the published material, we can see how unofficial enhancements have been applied to games such as DriveClub, Batman Arkham Knight, Red Dead Redemption 2, Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, and Crash Team Racing.

All of these games perform significantly better on the PlayStation 5 thanks to the unofficial enhancements. However, it is the merit of the modification creator, who had to invest their time into perfecting these games. It is intriguing why they did not decide to introduce an official update, which developers themselves could have done.

However, one cannot forget about the positive effects of these unofficial enhancements. For example, in the case of DriveClub, which had issues maintaining a stable 40 frames per second even on the PlayStation 4 Pro, it now runs smoothly at a constant 60 frames per second. Similarly, the situation is with Batman Arkham Knight, which did not even run at 30 frames per second on the PS4 and now we get a stable 60 frames per second on the PlayStation 5.

One of the best examples is The Last Guardian, which now runs in native 4K with 55-60 frames per second. Comparing this to the game’s performance on the PS4 Pro (20-30 fps), the difference is significant.
