Representatives from Google have announced the introduction of a new feature to the Android system, which has long been unavailable to users. According to insider Mishaal Rahman, widgets will return to the lock screen, reminiscent of the solution known from Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Although this can be seen as a return to the past, it is a step inspired by competing software, as lock screen widgets are also available on iOS.
However, similar to Apple’s system, users will not be able to place any widgets on the lock screen. Only those that have the appropriate “KEYGUARD” labeling will be supported. According to Rahman, the widgets that can be found in this testing phase are limited to official Google widgets. Although they are not yet perfectly matched to the rest of the interface, Google employees are still working on them.
It is not clear, however, if the lock screen widgets will be available to all Android 15 users. Rahman believes that the imposed innovation will primarily be available to users of devices with flexible screens and tablets. However, this is only speculation and has not been officially confirmed.
