Oppo Find X7 Ultra: Rewriting the Future of Smartphone Zoom

Recently, we have heard that some people are excited about a new phone that is currently available for pre-order. We are talking about the Oppo Find X7 Ultra, unfortunately not the global premiere after this pre-order period. Some Oppo fans have raised an interesting statement that inspired us to write this article: “Why doesn’t Oppo release this phone globally as the OnePlus 12 Ultra?”. It seems that there is something that interests people: the phone already had a million pre-orders.

So, in a parallel universe, Oppo releases the Find X7 Ultra as the OnePlus 12 Ultra globally. Let’s talk about what this phone has, what other flagship models on the global market currently don’t have, and try to understand where this excitement comes from.

Camera
The Find X7 Ultra (or, in our parallel universe, the OnePlus 12 Ultra) boasts its photographic capabilities. And indeed, it has something to be proud of. We are dealing with the world’s first dual telescopic camera with large sensors (14mm – 270mm range zoom) on this golden boy. The phone can also boast an advanced Sony LYT-900 sensor with a diagonal of 1 inch. Collaboration with Hasselblad (a leading manufacturer of medium format digital cameras and lenses) is also present.

Zooming in and out
Zooming on mobile phone cameras has never been impressive, but Galaxy S Ultra models have raised the bar when it comes to zoom. If you are familiar with standard zoom lenses (not on phones, but serious ones!), they are huge, large and do not fit into the mobile phone casing.

Of course, technology is constantly evolving, and even without delving into the advanced history of zoom in mobile phones, I can say that we now have a decent zoom range in phones like the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Let’s see how the zoom photos from flagship mobile phone cameras look like and what Oppo has to offer. Let’s start with the S24 Ultra model. Samsung’s flagship can optically zoom the image up to 5x, and digitally up to 100x (meaning cropping the image).

Let’s look at some examples of zoom capabilities in Galaxy:
At first glance, these photos are great. But when we zoom in to 10x, we see some noise in the sky, and 30x goes into Galaxy territory. Apple’s competitor has something called a Tetraprism telephoto lens, which is almost like a periscope lens. It has a 5x optical zoom, and the rest relies on cropping. In the 10x zoomed photo, we can see some noise in the background – especially visible on the tiles at the bottom. The text is readable, but the quality is not great here.

Another competing phone in terms of zoom is the Pixel 8 Pro. Google’s flagship phone also has a periscope lens (providing 5x optical zoom, and further zooming is achieved through artificial intelligence cropping). However, the camera has a resolution of 48 MP, which is slightly smaller than the 50 MP in Oppo. Pixel 8 Pro:

As you can see, in the 10x zoomed photo, there are some random distortions on the background elements. Some things are not sharp (like the lamp base), and there is also a certain level of noise. Now let’s talk about the wolf. The big bad wolf Oppo. The Find X7 Ultra is equipped with two periscope cameras, each with a resolution of 50 MP. The first one is a 3x telephoto lens – equivalent to 65mm for those of you who are photography enthusiasts. It also has a large sensor, allowing it to gather a lot of light information for a sharper photo. If you want to zoom in even more, you have a second 6x telephoto lens, equivalent to a 135mm lens. This is quite significant considering that the 5x zoom of the periscope lens in the Ultra model is equivalent to 115mm. In other words, 135mm allows for even greater zoom than 115mm.

In summary, Oppo is the only company with a 6x telephoto lens. And that’s not all: Oppo is also the only manufacturer with two 50 MP telephoto cameras, promising higher quality zoom photos. This practically means that Oppo offers more possibilities for taking zoom photos that can be truly utilized, whether it’s on social media or for creative photography. This provides greater freedom in capturing photos without worrying too much about the quality. As you probably know, the telephoto lens can also be used for portraits. It seems that people want more creative freedom, at least that’s what Oppo suggests.

Design: Oppo Find X7 Ultra on the runway
You will surely notice that flagship phones today are becoming like twins. Very similar. From different mothers, but still. Seriously, they have the same overall design, the look of a glass “sandwich” – it’s elegant, it’s nice, but it becomes redundant.
Our test units also have the same (well, similar) color. Seriously, it’s not on purpose! Do you see the brotherhood of the glass “sandwich”?

Oppo (or the potential OnePlus 12 Ultra in our parallel universe) offers something different. It has a dual-color leather design, a large and hard-to-ignore camera island, and a look that speaks for itself. In essence, Oppo offers something that looks like a camera and a phone in one. Although some may not like this design, it cannot be said that it is not unique.

The phone offers all of that… plus the basic flagship features
Of course, let’s briefly discuss the things we already have.
