Cambridge Mechatronics secures €37 million funding for expansion

Cambridge Mechatronics Limited (CML), the global leader in Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuators, has successfully closed a funding round worth over €37 million. The investment will facilitate the rapid growth of CML’s actuator and controller IC product portfolios. The funding round was oversubscribed and led by Atlantic Bridge, with participation from Intel Capital, Supernova, and the Sony Innovation Fund.

CML’s innovative SMA technology is primarily focused on revolutionizing smartphone imaging. The company develops disruptive solutions, including SMA actuators and controller ICs, that enhance camera technology in smartphones. The SMA actuators provide precise movements for camera components, enabling features such as autofocus and optical image stabilization. These actuators offer a higher force-to-mass ratio and are more compact and lightweight compared to traditional voice coil motor technology. Furthermore, SMA technology is free from electromagnetic interference.

One of CML’s groundbreaking products is the SMA Variable Aperture, which allows for continuous aperture control in a significantly smaller form-factor than the industry standard. Additionally, CML’s patented Zero Hold Power technology ensures that camera components remain stable during image capture without consuming any power.

With over 700 pending and granted patents, Cambridge Mechatronics is a true pioneer in SMA actuator design and control. Its innovative technology has already been integrated into more than 70 million products, including some of the world’s top-ranking smartphone cameras, according to DXOMARK.

The recent funding round will not only support CML’s expansion in the smartphone industry but also enable the company to venture into other markets. For instance, there is great potential for SMA technology in healthcare applications, such as precision drug delivery devices. SMA haptics, which provide localized and variable haptic feedback, can be utilized in smartphones and game controllers. The funds will be used to recruit and nurture talented teams, further differentiating CML’s product platforms.

This investment marks a significant milestone for CML and its technology platform, as stated by Osman Kent, Partner at Atlantic Bridge. The company is excited to support Cambridge Mechatronics in accessing new customers and markets, aiming to become the leader in camera control technology.

The funding round also received support from Intel Capital, Supernova Invest, and Sony Ventures Corporation, recognizing the transformational power of CML’s SMA actuator technology in the smartphone camera industry. The investment will enable CML to expand its product portfolio of SMA technology, with the aim of revolutionizing not only smartphones but also other industries beyond.
