Przedmieścia kosmiczne. Nasze miejsce w kosmicznej dzielnicy

Scientists have gained increasing knowledge about the structure of the Milky Way, allowing us to precisely determine our position and the consequences of this location. It turns out that the Solar System occupies an exceptionally favorable position, which has enabled the emergence of life on one of the planets. So let’s take a look at our cosmic neighborhood.

Orion Arm – the peaceful suburb of the galaxy

Our Milky Way is a spiral galaxy with four main arms known as the Sagittarius Arm, the Carina Arm, the Perseus Arm, and the Cygnus Arm. Our Solar System is not located in any of these arms but rather orbits halfway between the galactic center and its visible edge. It resides on the outskirts of the smaller Orion Arm, which neighbors the Perseus Arm.

Similar to the concept of habitable zones around individual stars, scientists can identify “ecospheres” – areas in the galaxy where conditions are conducive to the emergence of life. However, many planetary systems in these regions still do not have suitable conditions because they revolve around the galactic center where the environment is hostile.

Cosmic suburbs

Our cosmic location can be determined by looking at our nearest neighbor – the triple star system Alpha Centauri. Two of these stars, Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B, are located about 4.3 light-years away from Earth, and the third object, the red dwarf Proxima Centauri, is only 4.2 light-years away.

Considering that the presence of our Sun in the outskirts of the Orion Arm provides us with a relatively safe and peaceful environment, we can consider ourselves fortunate. Unlike the regions inside the galaxy’s arms, where there is intense radiation and inhospitable conditions, our cosmic suburbs are safe and conducive to the emergence of life.
