She discussed the work of Chahine Hamze, a GIS expert at the Lebanese Red Cross, who used GIS to assist citizens in challenging situations, including evacuating injured soldiers from remote areas. Dr. Geraghty also showcased how GIS is used in refugee camps to help combat infectious diseases, address child stunting, and tackle mental health issues.

Dr. Este Geraghty also emphasized the importance of sustainable development, using the Philippines as an example where GIS technology is utilized to map the country’s vulnerabilities. She highlighted the “crisis imagination” initiative introduced by Dr. Renato Solidum from GeoRisk Philippines, which takes traditional mapping to a whole new level.

Ronda Schrenk’s presentation focused on the work of USGIF in remote sensing, presenting multiple case studies. She discussed the assistance provided to Libya after Hurricane Daniel, where geospatial technology enabled the assessment of the most devastated areas and the establishment of safe evacuation routes. She also mentioned the use of satellite imagery to coordinate firefighting teams responding to forest fires in Canada and the United States.

Both presentations underscored the vital role of geospatial technology in addressing environmental conservation, healthcare crisis prevention, and sustainable development. These are just a few of the many fields in which this technology contributes to creating a better world.
