Anglo American Signs Agreement to Support Finland’s Battery Metals Strategy

Anglo American, a leading mining company, has signed a new business agreement with Finland to support the country’s battery metals strategy. The agreement, outlined in a memorandum of understanding (MoU), was signed with Finnish Minerals Group, the government entity that manages mining investments. The partnership aims to explore and capitalize on various opportunities within the battery metals sector.

Alison Atkinson, Head of Projects at Anglo American, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, “We are looking forward to working with Finnish Minerals Group to unlock the potential of our agreement and take advantage of the numerous opportunities it presents.”

One of Anglo American’s significant projects in Finland is the Sakatti project located in the Lapland region. The project’s environmental assessment study was recently approved by Finland, revealing promising prospects for copper, cobalt, nickel, and platinum group metals.

Finnish Minerals Group is another important player in Finland’s battery metals industry. The group is actively pursuing investments downstream in the battery value chain. As a 20% shareholder in the €588m Keliber Lithium project, Finnish Minerals Group is working alongside Sibanye-Stillwater, the controlling shareholder, to develop the project. The Keliber Lithium project aims to produce approximately 15,000 tons of lithium hydroxide per year, a crucial component used in manufacturing lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.

Finland’s strategic importance in the battery metals sector goes beyond its mining capabilities. The country benefits from an abundance of hydropower, giving it a competitive advantage and the potential for a premium market for its metals. With this advantage, Finland is positioning itself as a key supplier of raw and semi-finished battery metals to the European market.

The partnership between Anglo American and Finnish Minerals Group is a significant step in advancing Finland’s battery metals strategy. It demonstrates the growing recognition of Finland as an important player in the global battery metals industry and emphasizes its commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly mining practices.
