Internet Freedom Under Threat: A Global Perspective

2024-02-09

Global internet freedom is facing significant challenges as governments continue to restrict public access to the internet. Recent incidents in Pakistan and Senegal, where internet access was cut off to control political discourse, have sparked worldwide concern about the rise in online censorship and surveillance.

According to the Freedom on the Net 2023 report by Freedom House, internet freedom has been on the decline for the past 13 years. Incumbent leaders often criminalize speech, block independent news sites, and manipulate information flow to influence elections. This is precisely what happened in Pakistan and Senegal, where democratic processes were undermined.

During a controversial election in Pakistan, the authorities suspended mobile calls and data, limiting the public’s access to information. The move was criticized by the opposition party as a “cowardly act.” Similarly, Senegal suspended internet services following the postponement of the presidential election, triggering unrest and raising concerns about freedom of expression.

To bypass censorship, the use of VPNs has surged in countries like Senegal. Citizens rely on VPNs to maintain anonymity and access information blocked by their governments. These countries, including China, Iran, and Myanmar, have a poor record of respecting individual rights.

Traditional threats to freedom of expression and information access persist. People face legal repercussions for expressing themselves online, and in some cases, they are physically assaulted or even killed for their online commentary. The challenges faced by individuals living under authoritarian regimes continue to be a pressing global issue.

Despite expectations of a rebound in individual liberties after the pandemic-related suppression in 2020 and 2021, the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Democracy Index 2022 revealed stagnation. The average global score for individual liberty remained essentially unchanged.

Repressive regimes are leveraging technological advancements to their advantage, making it easier to control the flow of information and limit individual freedoms. It is crucial for individuals and organizations to continue advocating for internet freedom and finding innovative ways to counter these threats.

Protecting internet freedom is essential for upholding democracy, promoting human rights, and fostering a free exchange of ideas. Governments should be held accountable for their actions that undermine these fundamental principles.
