Bezpieczne usuwanie baterii: kampania edukacyjna

Starting from Monday, 102,000 properties will receive special hangers with instructions on how to safely dispose of batteries, vaping devices, and gas cylinders. This initiative has been undertaken by the North Somerset Council and Avon Fire Service. The campaign aims to raise awareness among residents and minimize the risk of battery-related fires.

In recent years, the North Somerset area has experienced three fires caused by batteries. According to Council Member Annemieke Waite, this campaign is of great importance and aims to ensure people’s safety.

Lithium-ion batteries, often found in everyday items such as phones, laptops, and vaporizers, pose no threat when used correctly. However, improper disposal of these batteries can lead to explosions and fires.

Recently, one of the fires was caused by a discarded battery, which ignited a waste disposal vehicle in the neighboring Bath and North East Somerset Council area. Avon Fire Service suggests that batteries should be removed before disposing of other electrical items in recycling bins. Batteries should be placed in a transparent bag on top of the recycling bins, so that waste collection teams can see them.

Gas cylinders and larger battery packs, such as those used in cars and power tools, should be taken to local recycling centers.

Russ Mitchell, the group manager at Avon Fire Service, said, “We are delighted to partner with North Somerset Council on this campaign, as battery-related fires are a serious issue throughout the region. These fires not only pose a threat to victims and firefighters, but also cause significant property damage.”

Safe battery disposal is an important way in which residents can contribute to reducing the risk of fire outbreaks, Mitchell added.
