Nowy projekt General Motors (GM) zmierza do eliminacji ryzyka pożaru w bateriach EV

General Motors (GM) has filed a patent application for a new battery design with an integrated passive fire suppression system, as reported by GM Authority.

The application, numbered US 2023/0395849 A1, was submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and was published on December 7, 2023.

“The patent application describes a battery design that comprises a battery housing and a stack of battery cells housed within,” the report states.

“The housing contains a fire suppression material, while the stack of battery cells consists of multiple cells with a nonpolar electrolyte.

“The patented solution states that when the fire suppression material in the housing comes into contact with the nonpolar electrolyte, it is configured to contain the nonpolar electrolyte within the battery housing.

“This design is intended to prevent or inhibit the spread of thermal ignition between adjacent battery cells in the stack housed within the battery housing.”

According to GM Authority, battery fires have become a growing problem in the automotive industry as it transitions to electric vehicles.

GM’s Factory Zero experienced a fire in December 2023, believed to have been caused by a forklift damaging an EV battery pallet.

As previously reported, GM’s sales of electric vehicles have been on the rise.
