Mutengene: Location and History

Mutengene, known as Mutenge in the local language, is a small town located in the southwestern region of Cameroon, in the Fako department. It is situated about 15 kilometers south of the regional capital, Buea, and 50 kilometers north of the city of Limbe. Mutengene lies at the foot of Mount Fako, which is one of the country’s main volcanic peaks.

The town of Mutengene has a rich history dating back to colonial times. It was founded by German colonists in the early 20th century and has since become an important trade and administrative center in the region. It was initially known as “Villa Wilson,” named after British administrator E. W. Wilson, who oversaw the development of the settlement. After the area was transferred to Great Britain, the name was changed to Mutengene.
