Jak prawidłowo usuwać baterie, e-papierosy i pojemniki na gaz?

On February 5th, 102,000 properties throughout North Somerset received the appropriate handle for their black (general waste) bin, along with information on how to properly dispose of batteries, e-cigarettes, and gas canisters, as well as tips on home fire safety.

Lithium-ion batteries are found in many of our everyday household items, such as phones, laptops, and e-cigarettes. While these batteries are not dangerous when used correctly, they can pose a serious risk if not disposed of properly.

If batteries are damaged or crushed, for example, in a garbage truck, they can explode and cause a fire. To prevent fires, never place batteries, e-cigarettes, or gas canisters in the black general waste bin. When disposing of electronic devices in recycling bins by the curb, first remove the batteries and place them in a transparent bag on top of the recycling bin.

Gas canisters and larger battery packs, such as those for cars and power tools, should be taken to a local recycling facility.

This is not only a nationwide issue but also directly affects North Somerset. Three fires occurred last year – two in garbage trucks and one at a recycling facility – all caused by improperly disposed batteries.

Councillor Annemieke Waite, member of the board for climate, waste, and sustainable development, said, “This is a very important campaign that should help ensure the safety of our waste collection teams and our residents. It is particularly crucial to safely and properly dispose of batteries, especially for popular items like e-cigarettes. Recycling these items helps take care of our community and provide a more environmentally friendly future for North Somerset.”

Russ Mitchell, Manager of Avon Fire Rescue Group, said, “We are delighted to collaborate with North Somerset Council on this campaign, as waste fires caused by batteries are a concern throughout the region. These fires not only pose a danger to victims and firefighters but also cause significant property damage.”

“Proper battery disposal is an important way for residents to help reduce the risk of fire explosions. To learn more about fire safety at home, use our Home Fire Safety Checker at: tinyurl.com/22a8zfxs.”
